Fine tuning for a healthier lifestyle

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are a very important source of energy, providing glucose for immediate use by the body, and glycogen for our reserves. They also help build up the body's energy reserves and replace them when they are partly used up, as well as providing the greatest amount of calories. They help to balance the blood sugar level which is probably the most important factor in maintaining an even energy level and weight. It also helps determine your appetite.

Glucose, one of the most important carbohydrates, is a monosaccharide that circulates in the blood to supply the cells with energy. If blood sugar levels drop, you get hungry, but, if the blood sugar levels are too high, the body will convert the excess sugar into either glycogen (a short term fuel that is stored in the liver and muscle cells) or into fat (our long-term energy reserve).

Different Types of Carbohydrates

There are three types of carbohydrates: (1) simple carbohydrates (sugar), (2) complex carbohydrates (starches) and (3) fibre (NSP).
